Women’s Leadership Conference Speakers

We are pleased to feature the following speakers:

Dr. Mindy Bowie

Dr. Mindy Bowie is a Breast Surgical Oncologist at Woman’s Hospital who specializes in breast cancer surgery. She is certified in Hidden Scar™ breast surgery and her expertise is in nipple-sparing mastectomies and oncoplastic breast surgery. Dr. Bowie is active in breast cancer research and prevention and has been published in several breast cancer journals.

She is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Bowie has served as the Cancer Liaison Physician for the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and is an active member of the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She currently serves as the co-chair of Woman’s Hospital Breast Ad Hoc Committee and chair of the Breast Program Leadership Committee.

Alsie Dunbar

Over the course of her career, Alsie Dunbar has a proven and demonstrated career track record working for several Fortune 100 companies and has served in various roles which have included process and plant design, research and development, product quality management, and environmental regulation. With 19 years heavily vested in the chemical industry, professional scientist and engineer, Alsie used her personal experience to form THE STEMS GEMS Mentoring Project, where she has mentored more than 400 girls, five of whom have received Student of the Year distinctions in Ascension Parish. Alsie has been recognized as a Baton Rouge Business Report Top 40 under 40, has received proclamations from the City of Gonzales and the Parish of Ascension, was selected as the 2016 A+PEL Volunteer of the Year for Gonzales Primary and Pecan Grove Primary for her, received the LSU Esprit de Femme Award and was in Southern University Alumni Federation’s Inaugural Top 40 Under 40 Cohort. Alsie also recently was recognized as a Torchbearer by the 100 Black Women of Greater New Orleans and an InRegister Woman with a Cause. Alsie ran for State Representative for District 58 in 2017.

Jill Garner

Jill is a dynamic speaker, award-winning author and publisher of respect-based social emotional curricula and training for students, educators, parents and business professionals.

In 2002, Jill founded nonprofit Manners of the Heart to confront the incivility in our society by first offering an elementary school curriculum, followed by the Gold Mom’s Choice Award book, Raising Respectful Children in a Disrespectful World, for parents. Soon after, WAFB began airing a monthly segment featuring Jill offering advice and activities to parents encouraging family togetherness.

The Business of Manners training grew out of requests from businesses seeking assistance in establishing a culture of respect that could become self-perpetuating and self-sustaining.

Working tirelessly for nearly 20 years, Jill has become a highly regarded subject matter expert, appearing on the CBS Early Show, CNN and more than 350 radio shows. Locally, “Manners Minutes,” a daily radio broadcast promoting civility, can be heard on iHeart stations. She has delivered trainings across the country, inspiring educators, encouraging women, and awakening businesses. Jill reserves time to serve on the advisory boards of DreamTeachers and ICare, while remaining committed to First Presbyterian Church, her home base. The most precious hours of her life are spent as wife, mother and “GG” to her adored grandchildren. Jill’s contagious passion for the Manners of the Heart message rouses listeners to action.

David S. Gunn

David S. Gunn is an attorney at the law firm of Gunn & York, LLP, where his practice focuses upon complex civil and criminal tax dispute resolution and representation before the IRS and Louisiana Department of Revenue. David also practices in the areas of tax and estate planning, including the drafting of wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents. David is experienced in the formation of corporations, LLCs, and partnerships, in the negotiation and drafting of business contracts (such as buy-sell agreements), and is also experienced in sales/use tax controversies and litigation. He is also substantially involved in commercial, business and tax litigation. David formerly served (three terms) upon the Tax Law Advisory Commission of the Louisiana State Bar Association. For a number of years, David has graded the examinations for certification as an Estate Planning and Tax Law Specialist by the Bar Association. David has authored Articles on taxation published within the Louisiana Bar Journal and the Baton Rouge Bar Journal (“Around the Bar”). David is board certified as a tax attorney and as an estate planning and administration specialist by the Louisiana State Bar Association. He practiced for several years as a CPA. David earned his B.B.A. degree in accounting from Northeast Louisiana University and his J.D. degree from LSU Law Center. He taught a Business Law class in the LSU College of Business, for 20 years.

Shannon Janis

Shannon has been a vital part of the SB Wellness team for the past 10 years. SB Wellness Group is a local woman-owned business who specializes in worksite wellness programming and currently provides services for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana employees as well as a number of other local organizations. Shannon works in all aspects of SB Wellness Group, specifically using her talent to train, motivate, and organize the entire staff. She has a B.A. in Kinesiology, Fitness and Human Performance as well as years of experience in Group Exercise, Exercise Program Development, and Wellness Coaching. Shannon helps SB Wellness develop and manage a variety of programs for their corporate clients, including stress management, nutrition and exercise. She is a mother of three children, ages 10, 5, and 2.

Janice Lamy

Janice Lamy is an accomplished marketing professional and author with more than thirty years of experience leading successful marketing programs and mentoring young professionals. She brings in-depth expertise in creating programs and processes aimed at fueling exceptional productivity and generating fresh revenue. A creative problem solver, instructor, team leader and communicator, Janice has a proven ability to develop marketing and communications strategies designed to increase efficiency while substantially heightening performance levels.

Throughout her career, Janice has enjoyed serving as a mentor to others and offering guidance based upon her experience and observations. She finds fulfillment in watching young professionals grow into their careers and achieve their goals and aspirations. She is keenly interested in positively impacting a generation of women by providing career success guidance through her book, Creating Your Success Plan, and online resources. She sees a convergence of activity from many sources coming together to address the disparities between women and men in leadership roles. By helping women create their Success Plans, her intention is to contribute to that movement in a meaningful way.

Dr. Yvette Marsh

With over 30 years of experience in the field of human resource management, Yvette is currently employed as the Executive Director of Talent Management for the LSU Foundation where she is responsible for the oversight of all talent management and human resource functions: recruitment and staffing, benefits, classification and compensation, professional development, employee relations, payroll, performance management, and leadership development. She previously served as the Director of Training and Development for Louisiana State University and as a consultant with SSA Consultants, an internationally recognized organizational development firm. Her educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, a master’s degree in Information Systems and Decision Sciences, and a doctorate in Human Resource Education with an ISDS minor, all from Louisiana State University. She has served on various boards during her career, including the YWCA Greater Baton Rouge, the American Institute of Banking, the Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center, LSU’s Swine Palace, and Campus Federal Credit Union.

Sandy Michelet

Sandy Michelet has over 20 years of senior human resources leadership experience including tenure at a Fortune 500 company and in the technology sector. She earned a bachelor’s degree from LSU and a master’s degree in workforce development from the University of Southern Mississippi. She has addressed multiple human resources conferences and associations as a keynote and session speaker. Sandy leads Sparkhound’s people-focused strategies and initiatives to develop a high-performing, engaged culture. She holds both the Senior in Professional Human Resources designation and the SHRM-SCP. She has a Masters Degree in Workforce Development from USM and is an LSU alumni where she was in the LSU Tiger Band.

She is a former President of Greater Baton Rouge Society for Human Resource Management and will serve as State Director of Louisiana SHRM beginning in 2021. She has been lead singer for several local bands over the last 20 years. Sandy’s personal struggles with fertility have created a growing childless community. As she struggled through fertility issues, she realized that resources existed for women in the midst of fertility issues, but nothing existed “after infertility” So, she started TheChildlessLife.com, a blog dedicated to women for whom children are no longer an option….and those who are moving toward acceptance as a childless women. In 2018, she partnered with World Childless Week to advocate with the governor and mayor who proclaimed Louisiana Childless Week and Baton Rouge Childless Week. (The 1st state and city in the US.)

Dr. Keta Patel

Dr. Keta Patel is a proud mother, wife, and a speaker. Her passion is to help the people in her community using her knowledge in functional and lifestyle medicine as well as chiropractic care. She enjoys working with enthusiastic patients who are looking to improve their health by combining their commitment to health with her clinical expertise. Her hobbies include cooking, exercising, reading, dancing, and public speaking. Her favorite pastime is to de-stress by spending time with her family.

Just like you, she realizes that health is your most valuable asset. And because of that, she wants to dedicate her time to helping you live a healthy, productive, and thriving life. She wants people to recognize that the conventional route to treating chronic illnesses can be detrimental, and that more natural ways to take care of those conditions exist without any side effects. Rather than just looking at various ailments as all having separate origins, she sees the human body as a whole system that can be overloaded and stressed in many ways.

Dr. Keta wants to give her patients a better understanding on how the body works. Having this knowledge can create a greater impact on your personal health outcome. By empowering you with the knowledge of how you can be your own doctor, you can improve your health drastically and continue to thrive for a lifetime.

Christy Oliver Reeves

Christy Reeves is a five-time CEO who brings 25 years of successful leadership experience in helping grow both nonprofits and corporations. In her current role as the Vice President of Regional Community Affairs and Government Relations for Ochsner Health System, Christy develops external engagement strategies building on her proven track record of engaging communities and forging strategic partnerships. Prior to joining Ochsner, Christy moved two national nonprofits out of bankruptcy and into stability, demonstrating strong organizational management skills and the ability to maintain critical partnerships during times of great turmoil.  Through her work, she has secured strategic partnerships with global brands – Levi’s, eos, JCrew, Netflix, the XO Group – and built robust relationships with major grantmaking entities – Robin Hood Foundation, Kresge, General Mills, the Greenlight Fund, Rockefeller, and the Ford Foundation.

Christy also led all external and brand partnerships on behalf of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana for almost a decade as the Executive Director of their Foundation. There, she conceptualized and executed one of the largest collective impact partnership programs in the world, including more than 200 partners from multiple sectors, and positioned the Blue Cross brand as the catalyst in improving the health of the state, turning a $10M investment into nearly $30M in support for community health programs across the state of Louisiana.

Christy has been a guest lecturer at Princeton University, an advisor to LG’s corporate philanthropy leadership team in Seoul, Korea and remains an active Teaching Fellow for Boston College School of Management’s Center for Corporate Citizenship. She was named to Baton Rouge Business Report’s Influential Women in Business and Forty under 40 lists. She has also been honored as Volunteer of the Year by Capital Area United Way, is a graduate of Baton Rouge Area Chamber’s Leadership Baton Rouge program and received the Shine the Light on Louisiana Exemplary Work Award from the Lt. Governor of Louisiana.

Beverly Brooks Thompson

Beverly is a published academic and practitioner in the field of philanthropic leadership. With over 20 years of fundraising experience, Thompson has served as senior counsel to leadership of the most prestigious non-profit organizations and boards in the country with responsibility for campaign development, implementation and management for programs that exceed goals of $500 million. In addition, she advises families, family offices and family foundations on their philanthropic planning and corporations in corporate responsibility and employee engagement strategies. Beverly is an in-demand philanthropic subject matter expert in the media and speaker at international conferences and serves as a Certified Advisor in 21/64 Next Generation Family Wealth and a Master Trainer for the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Beverly ran for State Senator for District 16 in 2019.

Tami Tucker York

Tami Tucker York is a partner with the law firm of Gunn & York, LLP, where her practice focuses upon complex civil tax dispute resolution and representation before the IRS and Louisiana Department of Revenue. Tami also practices in the areas of tax and estate planning, including the drafting of wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents. Tami is experienced in the formation of corporations, LLCs, and non-profit/tax-exempt entities, in the negotiation and drafting of business contracts (such as buy-sell and redemption agreements), and is also experienced in sales/use tax controversies and litigation and the (recently concluded) IRS Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program. Tami earned her J.D. degree from LSU Law Center in 1997, where she served as Moot Court Chairman. Tami lives in Baton Rouge with her husband, Will, and her two children, Savannah and Will.
